Director’s Note

Welcome to The Whale Theatre, and thank you for joining us for our production of Molly Malone & Bram Stoker in The Curious Case of the Irish Yeti — Alan Nolan’s wildly imaginative, hilarious, and utterly charming adventure through Victorian Dublin. It’s not every day you get to direct a show that features a legendary fishmonger, the creator of Dracula, and a fearsome (but maybe misunderstood?) Yeti — all in one delightfully bonkers tale.

From the first read, I knew this story would be a joy to bring to life. It’s packed with history, humour, and heart — a tribute to Irish storytelling at its most playful. Our cast has thrown themselves into this madcap world with infectious energy, from the intrepid and heroic title characters, to the mischievous Sackville Street Spooks and a host of other colourful characters.

From the very beginning, this has been a production powered by heart, humour, and a whole lot of creativity. Our incredible cast — Elaine Cullen, Oisín Twohig, Ronan Woods, Holly Byrne, Sabrina-Rose, and Katie Ryan — have brought this wild world to life with energy, wit, and real magic. A huge shout-out, too, to our wonderful ensemble players Eve Cullen and Caoimhe Devlin, whose presence adds such colour and depth to every scene.

Visually, the world of the Irish Yeti simply wouldn’t exist without the phenomenal costume design by Ciara Phelan, whose eye for character and detail has helped shape every look on this stage. Her work has truly elevated the production.

A special mention must go to the fantastic original songs by the brilliant D. Cullen, (with contributions from Sinead McConville and Alan Nolan), whose music adds an extra layer of magic to the madness, capturing the mood of mystery, mischief, and mayhem that runs through the heart of the play.

This project also holds something deeply personal for me. It has been a true labour of love — the result of a long-standing friendship and creative partnership between myself, author Alan Nolan, and producer Ian Whelan. We’ve been pals for a lifetime, and this show is, in many ways, a celebration of that enduring bond — a shared sense of humour, a passion for stories, and the joy of making something special together.

We’re especially lucky to be performing this piece at The Whale Theatre — a home for creativity, curiosity, and community. It’s the perfect setting for a show that celebrates the power of imagination, and we’re so grateful for the support and spirit that surrounds this space. To Ross, Brian, Paul, Nikki, Keah, Paul, Pete, we are deeply indebted.

To our technician, Cillian O'Donnell, thank you for your calmness amidst the chaos.

This production is a tribute to friendship, bravery, and the joy of a good story well told — whether by candlelight, streetlight, ghostlight, or moonlight over the Dublin rooftops - from Summerhill to Sheriff Street and from Sackville Street to Smithfield.

Thank you for being here, and enjoy the show!

With much love,
Paul Cullen (Director)
